Proserpine. Art-study.
This is a depiction Proserpine, daughter of Ceres, holding a pomegranate in her hand. Legend has it that Proserpine was abducted by Pluto and taken to the Underworld, where she became his bride. Her mother searched for her, but Proserpine's fate was sealed when she ate a forbidden fruit. She was allowed to return to the world of the living for half the year, but spent the other half in the Underworld. This story explains the seasonal cycle of crops, which Proserpine's mother controls.
Work is an art-study of "Proserpine" by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1882).
